How to Handle Traffic Load on your Website

The loading of a website can vary considerably depending on the number of users, the higher the number the slower it will take for your website to load. When a website is at its peak traffic hours, when there is the maximum presence of users then the functioning of a website declines very fast.

To be able to improve the performance of a website during this peak traffic time, it is important to estimate with more precision when this peak time is more likely to be and what kind of traffic it can sustain during both average traffic times and peak traffic.

It is not easy to estimate exactly when the peak traffic hours are, as this can have an effect on the content of a website, which may possibly become viral and gain unforeseen success. There exist three issues that can turn content into viral and boost a website, notably: humor, authenticity and social debate.

Funnily enough, when a website goes viral it takes people by surprise as they never expected to have such a success. Not only the owner of the website is surprised, so is the website itself. Imagine a scenario of a website suddenly having more than one hundred thousand users visiting its web pages in just one hour. The website owner would certainly be overjoyed with this popularity; unfortunately, this experience could turn out to be a bad one, due to slow functionality of the website or even its unavailability.

If you think that your website, which currently has a low traffic presence but may stand a chance of going viral, you should consider that the requirements you may need for an intensified traffic peak could be at least thirty-fold more than your current traffic.

An average promotion or marketing strategy on a website can, not only cause the website to go viral, it can also generate a spike in traffic. A traffic spike is more predictable to you as the owner of the site than an accidental viral traffic peak. This is because you will have focused on a promotional strategy for example, or are giving users discount coupons; therefore, you can safely estimate that there will be a spike in traffic as a consequence of this promotion strategy.

To be able to correctly estimate peak traffic, there are a few guidelines you can follow:

If your website is one amongst those who receive a regular flow of high density user traffic then you can safely estimate that your peak traffic will be five-fold during the peak hours.

If your website only has a low traffic flow and you have never estimate your traffic data before, then you should estimate that peak traffic can be thirty times what it is currently, if you add content that may go viral.

With data from peak time that you have had in the past, you can easily predict the times of your peak traffic. With your past data, simply add on a percentage to your normal traffic peaks and you will get a reasonable estimate of your high peak traffic.
