Content management is an important part of maintaining a website, and as one would expect, this job is given to a webmaster. They are supposed to take care of updating the material posted on the website, to ensure that it is not only accurate, but ensure that it delivers on information. It’s important to keep it interesting too, as this promotes its readability. Most webmasters are responsible for content placing, determining which pages to post, and how to link the pages. They decide whether the content will need any graphic assistance in terms of images, videos, or 3D models. Then there is the question of who develops the content. Is it really the webmaster?
When the internet was slowly gaining acceptance into our lives, the webmasters job was less complex, and less involving. Because the nature of the tasks that they were handling was simple, webmasters were tasked with the job of creating content. They best understood the objectives of the site they helped create, and were therefore well versed in the kind of content the website needed. But the rate of evolution for the internet was faster than any one had anticipated. The job of the webmaster became bigger, and web content development became more complex. The average content developer is not only supposed to be versed in technical writing, but also in graphic design, documentation, and sometimes in HTML. Because of this bigger skill set needed, a webmaster is on average, not the content developer.
The content of a website is what continually draws visitors, so it stands to reason that the content development process should be a thorough one. The numbers of websites in existence today are in their millions, and for a site to be successful, it has to offer something that all the other websites cannot. It has to reserve uniqueness, and continually rise to the task of providing fresher information for the visitors that frequent the site. In regard to this the web content developer chosen to generate material for a website, should be well versed in the topics whose content is being written. Professional writers are commonly contracted because they not only know how to research the information, but also present it in the most intuitive way. They may be required to improve the value of the content by having some multimedia additives. This is where some knowledge in graphic design is considered invaluable. It’s not a necessity in every content developer, as there are always design artists in the team to aid in this part. Coding in HTML is left to the webmaster or the web producer, before the content is finally posted on the website.
Web content development is a continually demanding task, and arguably the most constant one as far as website maintenance is concerned. The webmaster is involved in the process as the manager, ensuring that the content generated is most befitting to the site, and that it meets all set requirements, and above all, it remains attractive enough to new visitors.
